How to Get the Benefits of an Ice Bath:
After an intense workout or just general wear and tear on the body, there's a need to treat limbs and joints, and professional athletes always use an ice bath.
Here's how to get the maximum benefits from an ice bath - and you can, too!
- Immediately after your workout (as soon as possible), take an ice bath or prepare it before you start exercising.
- Stay warm while preparing the ice bath. While you wait, double up on your clothes (consider a warm hat and even gloves!). We don't want you to get cold before you use the ice bath.
- Slide into the ice tub (and try to shriek like a child!). Consider wearing a top to keep the top half of your body warm.
- Sit in it for about 5-10 minutes (some specialists recommend 12 minutes as the magic number, but don't force yourself to stay in that long; you can gradually increase this time if it's too cold at first).
- Sit up straight and extend your legs out in front of you to reduce joint swelling.
- When you're ready, get out of the ice bath, remove your top (if you chose to wear one), and take a VERY SHORT lukewarm shower - from 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Eat something (healthy sandwiches are ideal) and begin your post-exercise stretching. Some people prefer to stretch before the ice bath; this is entirely up to you, and you should try both ways to find out what gives you the best results.
